Rocky Seashore

Dark boulders shoulder their way into a cold sea, the shore built up in heavy slabs of umber and grey. Rocky Seashore comes from Nicholas Roerich, a painter who treated stone as something alive. The composition piles fractured rock against water, each ridge picked out in slate, moss green, and a band of pale sky low on the horizon. The sea lies nearly flat, broken only where the headlands cast their shadow. Roerich tempers the mineral bulk of the cliffs with thin washes of blue along the tideline. It belongs in a study or a hallway where natural light can move across the stony tones throughout the day.
