Rocks of the Gulf of Finland

Granite boulders crowd the foreground, their grey surfaces split by seams of ochre lichen and the cold wash of Baltic light. Rocks of the Gulf of Finland by Ivan Vladimirov sets that stony shore against a pale, restless stretch of water. The artist works in muted oil tones, layering slate grey, milky blue and rust so the rock reads almost sculptural, each crest catching a thin northern sun. Waves break thin and white at the base. Such a scene suits a study or a hallway with stone or linen textures, where its cool palette and hard horizontals can hold a quiet wall between windows.
