Rocks of Ladakh

Boulders fill the foreground, stacked and sun-struck, in Nicholas Roerich Rocks of Ladakh. A Tibetan landscape reduced to its bones: stone, shadow, thin high-altitude air. Tempera-like color sits flat and deliberate. Burnt sienna and iron-red rock faces carry coarse crosshatching, while cool violet shadow pools between the boulders. Behind them a distant snow ridge burns pale rose against a sky of deep tempera blue, laid in bands that seem carved rather than brushed. Nothing softens the geology. Roerich painted the Himalayas as sacred territory, and the rocky strength here suits a study, library shelf, or hallway that favors contemplative terrain.
