Rock Cliffs by the Sea in Britain

Sheer rock cliffs drop to a churning sea in this Breton coastal subject by Gustave Loiseau. The title names Britain, but the painting reads like the granite coast of Brittany, where the Channel gnaws at the headlands. Loiseau builds the rock faces from short, directional strokes, grey and russet over pale ground, so the stone seems to fracture under Atlantic light. Below, the water churns in white and cold green. Gulls scatter small dark notes across the sky. Hang it where you want a window that stays open to weather: a stairwell, a seaside cottage living room, or a study that needs cold air in it.
