Road to Versailles

A pale ribbon of road leaves the village edge and runs for open country in Road to Versailles by Gustave Loiseau. The whole scene is carried by short, patient touches. Crosshatched oil strokes stack like woven fabric across the sky, grey blue shot with white. The roadbed lies ochre and dust pink, wheel-rutted, while hedgerows flicker in fresh green. Light does the arguing here; nothing is outlined, everything is built from layered color. In a study or along a hallway it slows the pace of a room, the way a quiet lane outside Paris slows a Sunday walk.
