River Scene

A wide river carries the whole composition in Albert Marquet River Scene. Water stretches level across the frame, broken only by moored hulls and a far bank of low rooftops. The palette holds to Marquet at his quietest: blue-grey water brushed in long horizontal strokes, a pale sky washed thin at the horizon, quays and facades reduced to blocks of muted ochre and slate. Small masts and cranes give the only verticals. Everything sits still, weight distributed with the calm of someone who painted harbors by the hundred. Suited to a study or a hallway that needs a window, a horizon line, and room to breathe.
