River Epte, Giverny

Sunlight breaks across the surface of the Epte where it slows past Giverny, painted by the Californian impressionist Guy Rose. Willow shadow and reflected sky trade places on the water. Dabs of violet, jade green and pale gold sit thick on the surface, brushwork still crisp, the current suggested rather than drawn. Banks dissolve into haze where the light flattens everything to one warm tone. A quiet corner of a study, sunroom or reading nook suits its calm riverine air.
