River Bend in Normandy

A river bends hard past a cluster of Normandy rooftops in this Gustave Loiseau composition, the water curling away toward low meadow country. Loiseau builds the surface with short, crosshatched strokes of green and grey, oil paint dragged into ridges that catch light along the bank. Poplars stand thin against the sky, their trunks a wiry vertical rhythm above the reflections. Willow shadow cools the near bank. A calm corner of a study or reading room suits this quiet bend of water.
