River banks in Choisel

Poplars line the water at Choisel, their trunks painted in quick vertical strokes of violet and rust, the whole riverbank caught in the loose confident brushwork of Louis Valtat. The water itself runs in short horizontal pulls of blue green, broken by reflections the color of oxidized copper. Grass along the near bank carries strokes of chrome yellow and deep viridian, and the sky above stays pale, almost chalky, letting the foliage do the color work. Every mark sits on the surface openly, the kind of fat oil handling Fauvist painters favored before they toned anything down. Hang it where afternoon light can answer the yellows: a hallway, a study, or above a reading chair with a window nearby.
