About this work

River Avon

River water carries the eye first. This River Avon scene by Algernon Talmage opens onto a slow English current, its surface broken by pale reflections and soft ripples where the bank narrows. Talmage painted landscape the way the Impressionists taught him, wet brush against wet brush, letting sky and water bleed into one another at the horizon. Look at the tonal work here: grey-blue shallows, a muted olive reflection along the near edge, and a sky handled in broad washes of pearl and smoke. The light sits low, the kind that flattens shadows and turns distant fields into bands of lavender and sage. A quiet study corner or a hallway that needs breathing room suits it well.
