River

Water carries the whole composition. A river runs broad and low across the picture plane, its surface broken into quick strokes of slate blue, pewter grey, and a cold green that reads almost metallic where the light catches the current. Banks curve inward on either side, dark with wet earth and low reeds. Rylov paints the current rather than the scenery: the brushwork follows the flow, short diagonal passes layered until the water seems to move. Sky and water trade colors, pale silver above mirroring the channel below, so the horizon nearly dissolves. A study, hallway, or any quiet corner with good daylight suits this cold northern current well.
