Rio-Grande

The Rio-Grande cuts through a sun-scoured gorge in Nicholas Roerich Rio-Grande, the painter at his most spacious and American. Water threads pale between dark rock walls while high mesas burn ochre under a hard sky. Roerich layers the valley in his signature tempera flatness, contour drawn clean as an incised line. Sage green lowlands give way to violet shadow, and the river itself reads as a single cool ribbon against the heat. The proportions feel ceremonial, almost Himalayan, applied to New Mexico terrain. Hung in a study or reading room facing strong light, it holds the far distance on a wall of its own.
