Right Hand of an Apostle

Fingers half closed, tendons taut beneath the skin, a hand rises from a smoky blue ground. Right Hand of an Apostle is a preparatory drawing by Albrecht Durer, made to solve how light moves across living flesh. Gray ink laid in fluid strokes builds the knuckles and the ridge of the thumb. White heightening catches along the index finger and the back of the wrist, while the prepared sheet turns every shadow between the fingers cool. Veins cross beneath the surface like drawn wire. It belongs where looking is close and quiet: a study, a reading nook, an entryway that ends in a single focused subject.
