A quiet bend of the Daugava holds the frame in Riga. A nook of the embankment by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky, where water and old masonry meet at an oblique angle. Grey stone quays step down toward the river, their edges softened by wash and fine crosshatching. Gabled warehouses lean behind, windows dark and regular, while a lone figure on the embankment lends scale to the stillness. Tonal sepia and slate dominate; the sky is left almost bare, giving the architecture its weight. Well suited to a study or reading nook, where quiet urban scenes reward long looking.
