Ridge of Everest

Everest carries a single ridge across the whole composition, its crest running like a spine of ice from lower right to upper left. Nicholas Roerich named the subject plainly and painted it the same way. Deep cobalt shadows fill the couloirs while the snowfields hold a pale, almost chalky white, and higher up the air turns violet. The brushwork lies flat and even, tempera smooth as fresco, so the mountain reads in broad planes of color rather than detail. Below, a dark foreground band anchors all that light. A quiet study, a hallway with north light, or a reading corner in cool grays and blues would welcome its stillness.
