About this work

Ridge. Approaches to Everest

A long spine of snow climbs toward a distant peak in Ridge. Approaches to Everest, one of the high Himalayan scenes Nicholas Roerich built from stone, thin air and cold light. Tempera pigment sits dry and matte on the surface, so the indigo slopes read like pressed powder instead of glaze. Violet shadow pools in the couloirs while the snow crest stays unbroken white, and the far peak thins to a silhouette against a sky gone deep at its upper edge. Study walls and stairwell landings give the cool blues room to breathe, deepest under low evening lamplight beside pale wood and slate grey.
