Rhythm + Noise + Speed of Car

Crimson wheels spin into overlapping arcs as an automobile hurtles past, its body repeated in staggered outlines. Giacomo Balla titled the sheet Rhythm + Noise + Speed of Car, and velocity is the true subject. Long parallel strokes trail off each successive chassis like film frames run together. Black lines flicker at the edges, spinning discs ring outward in concentric circles, and dust kicks up in jittered zigzags of ochre and grey. Even sound is drawn: the engine racket sits in shivering contour. It belongs in a stairwell, a home office, or an entry with bare floors, anywhere the daily rush through the door gives those racing lines a running partner.
