Rex

A crowned sovereign sits enthroned before a burning sun, and the whole sky seems to bow toward him. Rex, by Lithuanian painter and composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis, stages kingship as a cosmic event. Deep browns and smoky greys fill the ground while a pale gold disc blazes behind the figure, its rays cutting across the darkness. The throne, the regalia, the flattened ritual geometry of the composition all feel drawn from a vision rather than a court portrait. Hang it where contemplation happens: a study, a library corner, a hallway that deserves a shadow of grandeur.
