Rex I

A single sun-disc crowns a jagged peak in Rex I, the opening vision in Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis cycle of kingly mountains. The ruler here is geology itself, seated above cloud. Ciurlionis builds the summit from flat planes of violet, slate and deep umber, each facet edged in darker line so the mass reads like cut stone faceted by hand. Washes of eggshell blue flood the sky, thinning to pale gold where the light presses against the ridgeline. Every slope feels drawn first, then toned, the pencil grid still ghosting beneath the tempera surface. Hung in a study or reading nook, it quiets a wall and gives the eye a summit to climb.
