Resurrection Monastery in Uglich

White monastery walls gather at the bend of the Volga in Resurrection Monastery in Uglich. Nicholas Roerich sets the cloister against a low northern sky, domes and tent towers catching the last flat light of day. Ochre pathways lead the eye past grey-green water toward the clustered church roofs. Cool cobalt shadows pool along the ramparts, and thin bands of pale gold break through cloud above the bell tower. Brushwork stays broad and deliberate, the kind of tempered painting Roerich used for his Russian churchscapes. Suited to a study or hallway where a quiet, architectural presence is welcome.
