Remains of the Snow at Okawa

Bare willows line the Okawa riverbank, their last snow melting into dark water. Fujishima Takeji painted this winter scene with a quiet eye, catching the exact hour when cold begins to loosen. Patches of white cling to the muddy bank and dust the reed stubble. The river runs slate grey, its surface broken by long reflections of the trees. Thin yellow light touches the far shore, and bare branches cross the sky in fine inked lines, each stroke of the brush kept visible and loose. A study or reading room suits its hush, somewhere the grey water and cold air can slow an afternoon down.
