Broken columns rise from grass, and Fujishima Takeji sets them against a warm Roman sky in Remains in Rome. Antique stonework becomes the whole subject, observed with a painterly eye honed in Europe. Sun-bleached ochre and dusty rose wash across the masonry, while deep shadow pools in fallen drums and half-buried capitals. The brushwork stays loose, almost impressionist, letting limestone texture and raking evening light carry the scene.
