Reforestation

Young trees crowd the clearing in Reforestation, one of the late forest subjects Emily Carr painted on the British Columbia coast. Saplings press upward in the foreground while the old growth looms behind them, dark and patient. Carr built these woods out of twisting, sculptural strokes, oil pushed around like wet clay rather than laid flat. The new growth reads in pale yellow-green against the sombre browns and near-black greens of the mature firs, and the undergrowth is a tangle of curves, trunks bending and re-bending like drawn wire. Light barely reaches the floor of the forest. A study, a hallway with good natural light, or a reading nook that could use something elemental would suit it well.
