Red Jug

Red jug, plump and glazed in deep madder, holds the center of this Frances Hodgkins still life, a single vessel given the weight usually reserved for figures. Around it, watercolor washes bleed past pencil contours: a tilted table edge, shadow pooling under the base, a fold of cloth in muted blue and ochre. Brushwork stays loose and modernist, leaving bare paper to do the work of light. A kitchen shelf, a breakfast nook, a dining room above plain linen: rooms where painted crockery feels at home among the real thing, in ordinary morning light.
