Red House, Rylovs Workshop on the Banks of the Volga

A red house stands at the center of this Rylov landscape, its walls built up in thick, saturated strokes of vermilion and rust. The title names the place plainly: the workshop on the banks of the Volga, rendered with the same directness that Rylov brought to northern rivers. Around the house, the color shifts fast. Dark greens and cool blues carry the riverbank, while the roof and door hold the warmest notes in the picture. Brushwork is broad and loaded, the kind that leaves the paint ridged where the light hits it. Water and sky stay loose, almost sketched, letting the building carry the weight of the composition.
