Ravines

Deep gullies split the hillside, their hollows holding blue shadow while the slopes above burn in late light. In Ravines, Pyotr Konchalovsky gives eroded Russian countryside the weight of architecture. Oil paint lies in thick ridges, ochre and raw umber dragged down the gully walls, sap green scrubbed across the rims where grass clings. Each slope is stacked from short loaded strokes, and a narrow band of pale grey sky closes the top of the composition. It belongs in a study with worn leather chairs and north light, or an entryway where earthen browns and greens carry through the rooms beyond.
