Ravine

Gorge walls drop away into cold shadow in Ravine, a landscape by Nicholas Roerich. Depth is carved from pigment rather than line, the way mountain light actually behaves. Look at how the rock faces are built: broad planes of slate, ochre and blue-green laid in flat, tempera-like passes, edges softened where mist gathers. A thin path or streambed threads the floor of the ravine, barely there. Above, sky and stone trade values, each cooler than the last, until the far wall nearly dissolves into altitude. Suited to a study or hallway where cool, quiet color can carry the wall.
