Rani Nulla River on Kulu Side of Rohtang Pass

Meltwater pours through the Rani Nulla, the mountain stream that descends the Kulu side of Rohtang pass in Nicholas Roerich Himalayan landscape. He painted these valleys during his Central Asian years. The ravine narrows between steep slopes of blue-violet shadow, its rushing water caught in a pale ribbon that cuts diagonally across the composition. Tempera gives the peaks their dry, chalky surface, layered in bands of cobalt, slate, and glacier white, with the lower valley held in cooler green tones. Made for a study or reading room, a landscape like this rewards long looking from a quiet corner.
