Rainy Day

Puddles hold the entire sky in Rainy Day, a landscape Pyotr Konchalovsky built with heavy, loaded strokes. The wet road carries more light than the cloud bank pressing down on it. Olive and umber warm the mud at the roadside, keeping all that silver light from going cold. Reflections stretch downward in long vertical pulls of the brush, and low rooftops dissolve into damp air at the field edge. Grey weather belongs in a study or reading nook, beside worn leather and old paper, where a rainy scene reads as company rather than gloom.
