Rainbow, New York City

A rainbow arcs over the Manhattan rooftops, and John French Sloan paints it as if the whole city stopped to look. The curve spans the picture, bending over chimneys and water towers, while wet streets below hold the sky in their shine. Sloans brushwork is loose and loaded, built from ash-grey tenements, sooty brick, and patches of lamplight gold. The bands of the rainbow glow in soft rose, green, and violet against a storm-washed sky, and tiny figures cross the avenue far beneath the arc. Every surface carries weather: rain still in the air, light just breaking through. It belongs in a study or a reading nook, where grey afternoons could use a band of color overhead.
