Rainbow

A rainbow arcs low over a dim, watery park in Rainbow, a landscape by Konstantin Somov, the Russian painter whose Symbolist work traded grandeur for delicate, wistful weather. Look closely and the band of color sits almost gently: washes of pale rose, watery green and thin gold laid in soft gouache-like strokes across a grey sky. Below it, garden paths darken with rain, tree canopies drip, and figures retreat along a promenade. Somov paints the air itself, that damp, silvered stillness just after a shower, when the park seems to hold its breath beneath the arc.
