Racecourse, Nice

The turf of the Cote d Azur racecourse stretches beneath a summer sky, jockeys and thoroughbreds gathered at distance in Racecourse, Nice by Winston Churchill. Palm shadows cross the foreground grass. The composition balances the pale grandstand against a sweep of blue Mediterranean air, painted in the broad, confident brushwork of an amateur who learned from masters of landscape. Horses mass along the rail in muted chestnut and grey, their forms built from loaded strokes of pigment rather than outline. Sunlight flattens the course to a single bright plane.
