Quay of Pothius in Pontoise

The quay runs level along the Oise, and Gustave Loiseau records every stone of it. Quay of Pothius in Pontoise sets the riverside promenade at eye height, moored hulls and house fronts held in one balanced view. Loiseau builds the scene in short, deliberate strokes of green, ochre and slate blue, the water carrying reflected sky in broken flecks of pale grey. Figures drift along the parapet. Masts rise thin and vertical against the softer mass of rooftops, and the whole surface keeps the crisp impasto of a painter working outdoors, fast and sure of his light. A quiet river town rendered with such attention suits a hallway or a sitting room where the eye wants somewhere to wander.
