Quay at Dieppe

Moored fishing boats crowd the quay at Dieppe in this Gustave Loiseau harbor scene, masts rising like bare branches against a channel sky. Loiseau works in his signature enamel-like impasto, laying short crossed strokes of slate blue, oyster grey and rust red over the wet stone of the dock. Figures move small and quick between bollards and coiled rope, while harbor water shivers green beneath hulls painted in broad confident slabs. Made for a hallway or study where the sea air seems to reach the room, a coastal French scene with real salt in it.
