Pustka

A bare tree holds an abandoned nest against a sky drained to grey. Ferdynand Ruszczyc called the picture Pustka, emptiness, and the word does the work of a full paragraph. Ruszczyc paints in broad, loaded strokes of leaden white and cold umber, the branches built up so thickly they carry actual ridges of oil. The nest sits high and off center, a scratchy cup of woven darks, while the landscape below dissolves into slush and thawed mud. It suits a study or reading nook, anywhere with a north light and a chair worth sitting in for a long while.
