Pskov Towers

Fortress towers of Pskov shoulder into a heavy northern sky, drum after drum of weathered stone. Nicholas Roerich painted these medieval battlements with the reverence he gave all old Russia. The matte tempera surface carries slate grey, moss green, and a sky of bruised violet where clouds churn behind the crenellations. Each drum is built from broad, blocky strokes, the masonry suggested rather than counted, while a low wall snakes between them across damp ground. It belongs in a study or reading room where the light stays low, a window onto the guarded frontier of old Rus, quiet and watchful.
