Pskov

White fortress walls of Pskov climb a green hill, their towers squared against a pewter sky. Nicholas Roerich set the old Russian city high, letting stone and cloud meet at the horizon line. Domes and battlements read almost as one silhouette. The tempera surface carries his usual dry, chalky handling: pale ochre ramparts, flat washes of violet and slate in the storm light, thin dark trees pressed against the wall base. Every brushstroke stays visible, giving the masonry a hand-hewn grain. The color is quiet, the composition firm. A study, hallway, or reading nook with cool walls gives this old Russian cityscape its due.
