Pskov Churchyard

White church walls rise above a Pskov churchyard, domes catching cold northern light while graves and wooden crosses scatter across the uneven ground. Nicholas Roerich renders the scene with the reverence of an old pilgrim. Ochre and cream masonry carries the composition, offset by mossy greens in the earth and a sky washed in pale silver blue. Thin white outlines give the church a bone-hard clarity, a hallmark of his early Russian landscapes. Figures move quietly between the headstones, small against the heavy architecture. This suits a study or library, anywhere a contemplative view of old Russia earns repeated looking.
