Primmeln in the Basket

Primroses spill over the rim of a woven basket, drawn by Koloman Moser in the confident line of Viennese Jugendstil design. Every petal is reduced to clean outline, every leaf to a flat, patterned shape. The flowers crowd upward in tight clusters, pale yellow and white against darker foliage, while the basket itself is built from short rhythmic strokes that suggest wicker without laboring over it. Color sits in flat planes, the way Moser handled gouache for textile and wallpaper studies. Natural light suits it. A sunroom, breakfast nook, or hallway with morning light gives the primroses room to read as ornament rather than specimen.
