Prado Florido no Norte

A flowering meadow opens beneath a northern sky, and Harald Sohlberg gives that meadow the full weight of his attention in Prado Florido no Norte. Blossom and grass crowd the foreground, painted stroke by stroke. Sohlberg was Norway's painter of stillness, and here the stillness blooms. Violet and white flowers scatter across cool green ground, the brushwork tight and patient, while a pale Nordic light settles over everything. The palette runs cold at the edges, warm at the center, the way late spring actually behaves in a northern valley. Distant hills hold the horizon in muted blue. This belongs in a quiet reading room or a hallway where light changes through the day, somewhere the small flowers can be found again and again.
