Pothius Quay in Pontoise

Pontoise opens along the Oise, and Gustave Loiseau gives the town quay its full working life in Pothius Quay in Pontoise. Moored hulls, stone embankments, rooflines stacking up the hillside. His brushwork does the heavy lifting: short, squared touches of grey green laid side by side, water broken into pale horizontal dabs, masts and rigging scratched in with a loaded tip. The light sits low, so shadows run violet across the cobbles and the far bank dissolves into soft ochre haze. Hang it where river town rhythm belongs, a hallway, a den, above a writing desk that faces morning light.
