Vsevolod Meyerhold tilts forward in Nikolai Kulbin portrait of the Russian avant-garde, drawn in quick angular strokes that catch the director mid-thought. Kulbin worked the face from thick, urgent contours, letting the jaw and brow shear off in planes rather than smooth shading. Ink-dark accents weight the eyes, while lighter hatch marks flicker across the cheeks and collar. The whole head seems carved from a few decisive lines, the paper left bare around it. Suited to a reading nook, a rehearsal space, or any study where theatre people gather and argue.
