A white wooden portico rises against a grey northern sky, columns and turned balusters rendered by Valentin Serov in Portico with a Balustrade. Arkhangelsk. The rail runs level across the middle distance, each spindle slightly irregular, hand-shaped timber gone silver under years of weather. Broad wet strokes build the overcast sky; dry, dragged brushwork rasps the wood grain. Pale steps drop into shadow at the base. Cool neutrals and soft whites suit a stairwell or entryway with limewashed plaster walls, where the colonnade reads clearly from across the room.
