About this work

Port of Marseilles

Masts and funnels crowd the harbor of Port of Marseilles, painted by Albert Marquet with his characteristic restraint. Water fills the lower half of the composition, carrying reflections in gray green and slate. Tall cranes and shipping hulls rise along the quay, their verticals broken by pale warehouses and a low sky. Marquet thins his oil to near watercolor weight, letting the wharf edge read as a single dark line against bright sea. Small boats drift mid-channel, dwarfed by the hulls. A harbor scene like this suits a study or a hallway with strong daylight, where its cool tonality can carry across a wall without competing with the room.
