Port at Dieppe

Fishing boats crowd the harbor at Dieppe, their masts crossing the frame like a thicket of dark lines. Gustave Loiseau records the port with short, layered strokes of oil paint, the kind of brisk plein air touch that made him a quiet fixture among the post impressionists. The water shifts from milky grey to cold green where light breaks across the swell. Along the quays, low buildings in muted rose and ochre hold the horizon, and figures on the docks shrink to quick dabs of color. Loiseau, a devoted student of Rouen and the Norman coast, lets the rigging draw a fragile lattice over the whole scene. Suited to a study, a hallway, or above a reading chair in a coastal home.
