Poppy Flowers

Scarlet poppies lean across the surface, petals caught mid bloom in thick, deliberate strokes of red and vermilion. Pallady painted what he saw in the garden, and the garden answers back. Green stems cut diagonally through the composition, leaves rendered in olive and sap tones that keep the reds from burning out. The brushwork stays visible throughout, loaded pigment dragged and dabbed, petals given body with a second pass of lighter red at the rim. Dark ground behind the flowers pushes each head forward. A sunroom or breakfast nook wants this kind of subject, something alive and brief at once.
