Poppies

Scarlet poppies fill the frame, petals loosened and half-open, stems bending at odd angles across a soft green field of foliage. Stefan Luchian built the flower heads from thick, deliberate strokes of crimson and vermilion, letting the paint sit high on the surface so each bloom catches light differently. Pale centers glow against the red, and the leaves carry cool olive shadows that keep the composition from turning syrupy. Loose, almost restless brushwork in the background suggests a garden rather than a arranged bouquet, giving the whole surface a living, wind-touched quality. A natural fit for a sunlit breakfast room or a country sitting room where floral subjects feel at home.
