Poppies

Red poppies crowd the foreground, petals loosened by Bonnard loose, loaded brush. His painting of poppies sets scarlet heads against a garden backdrop that shimmers between green and violet. Look closely and the paint itself does the work. Thick strokes of vermilion and carmine build each flower, while dabs of lemon yellow break up the leafy middle ground. The background stays loose, half dissolved, so the blooms seem to push forward out of the canvas. That tension between control and abandon is pure Bonnard. A sunroom or breakfast nook suits it. The flowers bring garden color indoors all year.
