Poppies

Scarlet poppies crowd the frame, heads heavy with pollen, stems leaning every direction as if a wind just passed through. Octav Bancila painted flowers the way field workers see them: abundant, unruly, slightly tired by noon. The red is the first thing you register, a deep vermilion that thickens toward the shadowed undersides of the petals. Behind it, greens go from blue-grey in the stems to a warm olive where light catches the leaves. Brushwork stays loose and directional, each stroke following the growth of the plant rather than smoothing it over. Dark background tones push the blossoms forward until they seem almost within reach. Hung in a kitchen, sunroom, or hallway with morning light, the color carries across a room without any help.
