Poppies, Lilies and Blue Flowers

Scarlet petals shoulder past white trumpets in a squat ceramic pitcher, cornflowers threading through the green stems. Poppies, Lilies and Blue Flowers catches William James Glackens at his most color-drunk. Oil laid on thick. Vermilion and alizarin build each bloom without a drawn outline, cobalt heads cool the middle of the bunch, and the whites stay dense and creamy. Underneath, the table runs in quick stripes of ochre and olive. A breakfast nook or sunroom suits a buoyant floral still life, morning light answering all that red. A quiet hallway warms up under the loose, cheerful brushwork.
